The other was a repair ship for the West German Navy during the Cold War.įormerly USS Ulysses (ARB-9) of the Aristaeus Class Repair Ship becoming the lead ship of the Odin Class Repair Ship, she was transferred to the West German Navy and was renamed FGS Odin (A512) on July 2nd, 1960, she served in the West Germany Navy’s Naval Base Olpenitz at Kiel until she was sold for scrap in 1991. Odin was the lead ship of the Odin Class Coastal Defense Battleship. While this Odin was never constructed, there were two Odins to serve in the German Navy in history. She served the German Imperial Navy from 1895 until she was decommissioned in 1916.Īfter WW1, SMS Odin and SMS Agir were converted to merchant ships, Agir would be wrecked on December 8th, 1929 off Gotland, Sweden, and Odin would be sold for scrap in 1935, there have been no other Ägir’s since as far as I know. IRL, Ägir was actually Odin’s sister ship on the 3 single 238mm armed Odin Class Coastal Defence Battleships, the 2 ships were the SMS Agir and SMS Odin. However, this gun was passed over for the Scharnhorsts in favor of the 283 mm SK C/34 because German industry could only build 283mm guns at the time. Much like Roon’s guns, Odin’s 305mm main armament was only a planned weapon, of which a single prototype was built. In Ägir’s case, she’s a variant of the O class battlecruiser where she was designed more as a large cruiser vs. Ägir is similar to KMS Roon and Odin in World of Warships in that both ships were designed around a prototype German naval gun that was never built around a ship. Thanks to /u/FireWallZ_ Odin also bears some traits from the Deutschland class heavy cruisers as she was intended in World of Warships to be the immediate middle between the Deutschlands and the Scharnhorst class battleship. Odin is essentially a Scharnhorst but with 305mm main armament, and conspicuously looks like a King George V class battleship. Today, June 10th, it is the launch day for the German battlecruiser that likes positioning in a weird spot in your mainline, KMS Odin, and the Prinz Eugen UR retrofit that requires extra steps, KMS Ägir as both were released for sale in World of Warships on patch 0.9.5 in June 10th, 2020.
